He could cry. He just might. Seeing her filled him with so much hope and joy that the tears were just about ready to fall—but he held them back, because her being here didn’t solve the situation. She was one knight. Highly skilled, yes, but one against seven Sentinels? Cailan was hardly a match against one Sentinel, let alone many. Zehra would be more than a match for all of them, but she would have to reveal her dragon form, and that might make matters worse.

As it was, his poor companion was paralyzed with fear. He was unsure if she would be a true help in this situation.

“Who the hell are you? State your business, woman,” the leader said. His blade faltered against Cailan’s neck, a much-needed reprieve.

Cass, with one hand on her sword and the other against her hip, snorted as she looked at the man. She was always dismissive of angry men who looked down on her, and the way he looked at her said just that.

“I am Sir Cassandriel Enger, Knight of Protea. The boy that you are harassing is my little brother, and I would kindly ask you to release him.”

Well, there goes my identity…

He was at least happy to see that his sister was so readily willing to come to his defense. She hadn’t even flinched at the thought that maybe he had done something to deserve being arrested by the king’s best men.

The Sentinel looked between the two siblings, his face a mix of anger and disbelief. “This lout is your brother?” His words carried doubt, as did his eyes. Cailan understood that, though, since he was far too used to it.

Cass and Cailan looked almost nothing alike. She took after their mother, inheriting her more golden Korlandish coloring and jet-black hair that felt and looked like finely woven midnight silk. Her cheeks were defined and perfect and her narrow eyes held beautiful hazel gems. The only thing marring her was some scarring by her ear and a cut on her nose and above her eyebrow, from jobs and fights.

She was a picture of beauty, and at eighteen, she was one of the youngest and most well-regarded Knights of Protea. She was every bit the legacy of their father. And if she wasn’t a knight, he had no doubt that she would already be married to a loving husband and have a batch of children.

That hadn’t been her path, however.

Cailan, on the other hand, took after their father, though only in some rudimentary ways. They had the same sandy hair and dark eyes. He had his father’s stouter appearance. Cass had him in height by a couple of fingers. But though Cadmus Enger was a squat man, he was built like an ogre and moved like a jungle cat. Cailan didn’t have those graces yet and often wondered if he ever would.

Regardless of their general lack of physical resemblance, Cailan and Cass were siblings through and through, and though they didn’t always see eye to eye, he loved her, and she loved him.
